Who We Are

Learn More About Pack 557

Cub Scouting is fun for the whole family. In Scouting, boys and girls start with their best right now selves and grow into their very best future selves. It’s fun, hands-on learning and achievement that puts kids in the middle of the action and prepares them for today – and for life.

Cub Scout Pack 557 welcomes girls and boys from grades K-5. Most of our youth attend Briargate Elementary in Cary, IL, but Scouts may live anywhere within McHenry County to join Pack 557. We meet monthly at the Cary United Methodist Church.

What’s a Cub Scout pack?

Made up of 6 different dens divided up by grade level K-5, the Pack conducts the Cub Scout program with the chartered organization. It is led by our Pack committee, which oversees administrative functions.

Pack 557 meets once a month, usually at the Cary United Methodist Church or other location depending on the theme.

The monthly pack meeting brings together Scouts from every den, their leaders, and families for a large-scale event that showcases all that the Scouts have learned and accomplished in their individual den meetings.

A typical Pack meeting begins with a formal opening ceremony. In the program section of the meeting, dens may give presentations and performances that demonstrate what they learned during the month.  The highlight of the pack meeting is the formal recognition given to the Scouts who have earned badges, adventure loops, or other awards, and to leaders who may have earned training awards or deserve special recognition. This is followed by some general announcements and a formal closing ceremony to end the meeting.

Pack 557 meets several times a month outside of our normal pack meeting. There is always something going on in the pack from monthly outdoor hikes to sledding, our Blue & Gold Banquet and Pinewood Derby in the spring. The pack also has a fall and a spring campout that the whole family is invited to attend.

What’s a Cub Scout den?

A Cub Scout den is a small group of boys and girls, in the same grade who belong to a larger Cub Scout pack. The den provides a supportive and inclusive environment where young scouts can develop their skills, engage in fun activities, and make new friends. Dens meet regularly to participate in a variety of activities that align with the Cub Scout program, including outdoor adventures, community service projects, and crafts. The focus is on character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness.

What’s a Cub Scout Committee ?

A Cub Scout Committee is a group of dedicated volunteers responsible for overseeing the operation of a Cub Scout pack. The purpose of a Cub Scout Committee is to provide support and guidance to the pack leaders, ensuring that the pack runs smoothly and meets the needs of the young people in the program. The committee is responsible for recruiting new members and leaders, planning and organizing activities and events, managing finances, and providing training and support to the pack leaders. Additionally, the committee works to ensure that the pack is in compliance with the policies and guidelines of the Boy Scouts of America.

The roles within a Cub Scout Committee vary, but ours include:

  • Committee Chair
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Awards and Advancement Chair
  • Activities Chair
  • Membership Chair
  • Training Chair
  • Communications Chair
  • Fundraising Chair
  • Community Service Chair

Each of these roles is responsible for a specific aspect of the pack’s operation, such as finances, planning and organizing events, recruitment and retention of members, training and support of leaders, and promoting the pack and its activities in the community.
